Little Introduction to NETSUKE:
Because the traditional Japanese dress, the
KIMONO, had no pockets, Japanese people used about from the 17th c. on small,
of various material carved items, called NETSUKE, to keep all the objects (SAGEMONO),
which they wanted to carry with them, tight to the OBI, the typical belt
of the KIMONO. For this reason the Netsuke has to holes (himotoshi) for the cord
which fixes Netsuke and Sagemono together. When Japan was opened to the western
civilization around mid 19th c., people began to dress more and more in the
western style and the Netsuke was of no use anymore. But Netsuke were still
carved by artists (Netsukeshi) through the Meijiperiod, then more
detailed and idiosyncratic as they were now sought-after collectables.
At this time already Americans and Europeans got acquaintance with those
miniature artworks and started to collect them.
Many famous collections were founded worldwide in the second half of the 19th c.
Each Netsuke is unique and therefore a rare masterpiece of art.
